The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery, was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865. It was then ratified by the necessary three-fourths of the states on December 6, 1865, making slavery illegal throughout the United States. The Senate had passed it earlier on April 8, 1864. President Abraham Lincoln signed the joint resolution submitting the amendment to the states on February 1, 1865.
