The East Wing of the White House was added in 1942, originally conceived and constructed to house additional offices and staff, including the first lady’s offices, and to cover the construction of an underground emergency operations center. The wing is connected to the Executive Residence by the East Colonnade, and its expansion in 1942 marked a major reconfiguration of the White House complex during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency.
