The Gunpowder Plot occurred on November 5, 1605. It was a conspiracy by a group of English Catholics led by Robert Catesby to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London during the State Opening, with King James I inside, in an attempt to restore Catholic rule. The plan was foiled when a search of the Parliament cellars uncovered Guy Fawkes guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder, and he was arrested. The plotters were subsequently executed or died in the ensuing crackdown, and November 5 became known as Guy Fawkes Night, celebrated with bonfires and fireworks in Britain.
