The last residential school in Canada closed in 1997. The final school to close was Kivalliq Hall in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, which closed in 1997. Some accounts mention 1996 as the closing year for the last residential school, but this was before Kivalliq Hall was recognized under the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement in 2019. Other late-closing schools include the Muscowequan Residential School in Saskatchewan, which operated until 1997 as well.
