The Potato Famine, also known as the Great Irish Famine, occurred between 1845 and 1849. It was caused by a potato disease called late blight (Phytophthora infestans) that destroyed potato crops, which many Irish people heavily depended on for food. The famine led to over one million deaths from starvation and related diseases and caused a massive wave of emigration, particularly to America.
