The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on 6 February 1840. The initial signings occurred at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, with Captain William Hobson and a group of Māori chiefs signing te Tiriti o Waitangi. After the Waitangi signing, copies were circulated to obtain additional Māori signatures across the country, culminating in a wider signing process that extended over several months.
