Weed (cannabis) was legalized in Canada for recreational use on October 17, 2018. This made Canada the first major world economy and the first G7 nation to legalize recreational cannabis nationwide. The Cannabis Act (Bill C-45) established this legalization, allowing adults aged 18 or older to legally possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis, share it with other adults, and cultivate up to four plants for personal use, although some provinces set different rules. Medical marijuana had already been legalized in Canada since 2001, but recreational use became legal on that date with regulated retail outlets and safety standards put in place.
