Gorillas are native to the tropical forests of equatorial Africa, with their range divided mainly between two species: the western gorilla and the eastern gorilla.

  • Western gorillas inhabit the lowland tropical rainforests and swamp forests of west-central Africa, including countries such as Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, and parts of Angola. The western lowland gorilla is the most numerous subspecies and lives mostly at elevations from sea level up to about 1,600 meters. The Cross River gorilla, a western gorilla subspecies, is found in a limited area along the Nigeria-Cameroon border
  • Eastern gorillas live primarily in montane and submontane forests at higher elevations (650 to 4,000 meters) in east-central Africa. Their habitat includes the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Uganda. Eastern gorillas include mountain gorillas, which live in montane forests around the Virunga volcanoes and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and eastern lowland gorillas found in lower elevation forests within DRC

In summary, gorillas are found exclusively in the tropical forests of central and west Africa, with western gorillas occupying lowland rainforests in west- central Africa and eastern gorillas inhabiting montane and submontane forests in the Albertine Rift region of central Africa
