The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 rugged, mountainous islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean. They lie roughly halfway between Iceland and Norway, about 430 kilometers southeast of Iceland, 600 kilometers west of Norway, and 300 kilometers northwest of Scotland. The islands are situated at approximately 62º latitude North and 7º longitude West. They are part of the Kingdom of Denmark as a self-governing territory, with the capital city being Tórshavn on the largest island, Streymoy. The total land area is about 1,399 square kilometers, with coastline stretching over 1,100 kilometers. The islands are known for their steep cliffs, fjords, and green landscapes, and at no point on the islands are you more than about 5 kilometers from the ocean.
