The 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred in three main locations in the United States on September 11, 2001:

• Two planes (American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175) were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing both towers to collapse

• A third plane (American Airlines Flight 77) crashed into the Pentagon, the U.S. military headquarters, located just outside Washington, DC

• The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to regain control from the hijackers, preventing it from hitting another target, possibly the U.S. Capitol or White House

Nearly 3,000 people died in these coordinated attacks across these three sites
