The 9/11 attacks took place primarily in three locations in the United States on September 11, 2001:

• The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, where two hijacked planes crashed into the North and South Towers, leading to their collapse within hours

• The Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense located just outside Washington, D.C., where a third hijacked plane crashed into the western side of the building

• A field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where the fourth hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed after passengers attempted to regain control from the hijackers. This plane was believed to be targeting either the U.S. Capitol or the White House in Washington, D.C.

These coordinated terrorist attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and had profound global consequences
