Specifically, the Angles came from an area called Angeln in northern Germany, the Saxons from Old Saxony in northern Germany, and the Jutes from Jutland, now part of Denmark. They began migrating to Britain in the 5th century, reportedly invited by a British ruler to help defend against invasions after the Roman withdrawal. These groups settled in various parts of what became England, founding kingdoms such as East Anglia, Sussex, Essex, Kent, and Wessex, and laid the foundation for Anglo-Saxon England.
