Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic in the early to mid-20th century, developing from a blend of bolero with Dominican son and elements of merengue, and originally emerged as a rural, working-class music and dance form. Over the decades it evolved from informal, melancholic “amargue” music associated with bars and countryside communities into a popular national genre, eventually gaining international reach in both music and social dance forms.
