Basketball originated in the United States, invented by James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the International YMCA Training School (later Springfield College) as a back-to-indoor-winter activity for students. The original concept used a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals, with Naismith developing 13 basic rules to govern the game. The sport quickly spread through YMCAs and colleges, evolving from those first games into the global sport known today.
