Chernobyl happened in what is now northern Ukraine, near the border with Belarus, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant close to the city of Pripyat. The site lies about 100 kilometers north of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, within the area now known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
