Christopher Columbus first landed on an island he called San Salvador, which was known to its native inhabitants as Guanahani. This island is believed by many scholars to be present-day San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. Columbus made this first landing on October 12, 1492, during his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. After landing there, he continued to explore other islands such as Cuba and Hispaniola.
