When Jesus died, according to Christian belief and biblical interpretation, His spirit went to the realm of the dead, known as Sheol or Hades. However, He did not go to a place of torment but to a place often called Abraham's bosom or paradise, a place of comfort for the faithful dead. There, He proclaimed liberty to the spirits who had died in faith. After this, Jesus took these believers with Him to Heaven. This understanding aligns with passages such as Luke 16:19-31, Ephesians 4:8-10, and 1 Peter 3:18-20, which describe Jesus descending to the lower regions or Hades to preach and bring salvation to those who had died before His resurrection. Jesus' suffering ended at death, and He did not undergo further punishment or torment in this place. His body was in the tomb, and His spirit was in this comforting place until He rose from the dead on the third day.
