Terry Fox was forced to stop his Marathon of Hope outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, on September 1, 1980, after running for 143 days and covering 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles). He had to stop because the cancer had spread to his lungs. His journey began in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and he ran through multiple provinces before having to end the run in Ontario due to his health condition.
