The Anglo-Saxons came from a mix of Germanic tribes that originated in what is now northern Germany and southern Scandinavia. According to historical accounts, especially from the monk Bede in the 8th century, these tribes were the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. The Angles came from a region called "Anglia" near the Schleswig-Holstein area (modern German-Danish border), the Saxons from an area called "Old Saxony" in northern Germany, and the Jutes from the Jutland peninsula in what is now Denmark. These tribes migrated to Britain in the 5th century, initially invited to defend the land but then settling and establishing kingdoms across England.
