Kidney stone pain is typically felt in the following areas:
- Lower back and side (flank) , just below the ribs. This is the most common initial location of pain as the stone moves from the kidney into the ureter
- The pain often radiates to the lower abdomen and groin area. In men, it can also extend down to the testicles
- The pain is usually sharp, severe, and can come in waves (colicky pain) as the ureter contracts to push the stone along
- It may also be accompanied by a burning sensation or pain during urination , frequent urination, and sometimes blood in the urine
The pain can shift location and intensity as the kidney stone moves through the urinary tract, starting near the kidney and moving toward the groin over time
. In summary, kidney stone pain is most commonly felt in the flank (side and lower back), radiates to the lower abdomen and groin, and may be accompanied by urinary symptoms and changes in urine color
