Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body, which forms sharp crystals that deposit in the joints, causing pain and inflammation. This buildup can happen if your kidneys do not remove uric acid efficiently or if your body produces too much uric acid. Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines, substances found naturally in the body and in certain foods. Factors like genetics, diet (high in purines such as red meat and seafood), alcohol consumption, certain medications, and health conditions can increase the risk of developing gout. Men are more likely to get gout, and it often appears between ages 40 and 60, while women usually develop it after menopause.
