Translation in biology takes place on ribosomes, the cellular machines that read mRNA and synthesize proteins in the cytoplasm. In eukaryotes, translation occurs in the cytosol or on endoplasmic reticulum–attached ribosomes after the mRNA exits the nucleus; in prokaryotes, translation can begin while the mRNA is still being transcribed in the cytoplasm.
