The Cooper & Fry novels and TV series are set in England’s Peak District, primarily around a fictional Derbyshire town called Edendale.

Geographic setting

The story world is rooted in the real Peak District, a national park in central-northern England that lies mostly in Derbyshire but also extends into Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire. Within that landscape, the investigations centre on Edendale, a fictional rural town that serves as the main policing base and local community hub.

On-screen versus fictional world

In-universe, Cooper and Fry work in and around Edendale and nearby Derbyshire villages and farms, drawing heavily on local folklore and the moorland environment. For the recent TV adaptation, the narrative is still “set” in the Peak District and Edendale, but much of the filming took place in Ireland (notably County Wicklow and parts of County Kildare and Dublin), standing in for the Derbyshire scenery.
