Guyana is a country located on the northern coast of South America. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east. The capital and largest city of Guyana is Georgetown, situated on the Atlantic coast. Geographically, Guyana features a low coastal plain, hilly sandy regions, tropical rainforests, and savannahs. The country is part of the Caribbean region culturally and historically, though it is situated on the South American mainland. It is the only English-speaking country in mainland South America. Guyana occupies an area of about 214,969 square kilometers (83,000 square miles) and is one of the smaller countries on the continent. Its landscape includes notable features like the Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's most powerful waterfalls, and extensive rainforests that cover over 75% of its territory. The population primarily lives along the coastal regions and major rivers.
