Java is an island in Indonesia located in Southeast Asia, lying southeast of Malaysia and Sumatra, south of Borneo, and west of Bali. It is part of the Greater Sunda Islands and bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south and the Java Sea to the north. Java hosts Indonesia's capital city, Jakarta, on its northwestern coast. The island is politically and economically dominant in Indonesia and home to roughly half of the country's population. Java is divided administratively into several provinces and special regions: West Java, Central Java, East Java, Jakarta Raya (special capital district), and Yogyakarta (special district). It has a land area of about 49,976 square miles (129,438 square kilometers). Java is characterized by volcanic mountains, with a chain running east to west, and has a dense population with about 156 million residents as of mid-2024. Major cities on Java include Jakarta, Bandung, Bogor, Cirebon, Malang, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. The island has a rich cultural history influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and colonial Dutch rule, and hosts several UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple.
