Latvia is a country in northeastern Europe, part of the Baltic region. It is one of the three Baltic states, located on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. Latvia shares borders with Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, and Belarus to the southeast. It also has a maritime border with Sweden to the west. The capital and largest city of Latvia is Riga. The country covers an area of about 64,589 square kilometers and has a temperate seasonal climate. Latvia lies roughly between latitudes 55° and 58° N and longitudes 21° and 29° E.
