The liver is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath the diaphragm and just under the rib cage on the right side of the body. It sits on top of the stomach, right kidney, and intestines, and is mostly shielded by the lower right ribs. The liver takes up much of the space in the right upper abdomen, below the lungs
. It is the largest internal organ, weighing about 3 to 4 pounds (1.5 to 1.8 kilograms) and shaped roughly like a cone or wedge with two main lobes (a larger right lobe and a smaller left lobe)

- In the right upper quadrant of the abdomen
- Beneath the diaphragm and rib cage
