Palau is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Micronesia subregion of Oceania and consists of approximately 340 islands forming the western chain of the Caroline Islands. Palau lies about 741 kilometers east of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, around 1,300 kilometers southwest of Guam, and near 7.5° north latitude and 134.5° east longitude. The country is located southwest of Guam, north of New Guinea, and east of the Philippines. The capital city is Ngerulmud, situated on Babeldaob, the largest island of Palau, while the most populous city is Koror on Koror Island. Palau's maritime boundaries include international waters to the north, the Federated States of Micronesia to the east, Indonesia to the south, and the Philippines to the northwest. It has a land area of about 466 square kilometers (180 square miles) and features diverse island types including volcanic islands, coral atolls, and raised limestone islands known as the Rock Islands.
