Sakurajima is located in Kagoshima Prefecture, on the southern tip of Kyushu, Japan. It sits in Kagoshima Bay, just a few kilometers from the city of Kagoshima and is now a peninsula, having been connected to the mainland by lava flows after a major eruption in 1914.
