Skara Brae is a stone-built Neolithic settlement located on the Bay of Skaill in the parish of Sandwick, on the west coast of Mainland, which is the largest island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. It is about 6 miles north of Stromness on Mainland Orkney. The site consists of clustered stone houses and is Europe's most complete Neolithic village, dating back to roughly 3180 BC to around 2500 BC. Skara Brae is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often referred to as the "Scottish Pompeii" due to its excellent preservation. The site overlooks the sea and is near the freshwater Loch of Skaill. It offers significant insights into prehistoric life and has a visitor center for public tours and information.
