Tasmania is an island state of Australia located about 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of the Australian mainland. It is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait. Tasmania is Australia's smallest and least populous state, comprising the main island of Tasmania—which is the 26th- largest island in the world—and approximately 334 surrounding smaller islands. The capital and largest city of Tasmania is Hobart, situated in the southern part of the main island. Geographically, Tasmania lies roughly at similar latitudes to parts of New Zealand's South Island, Patagonia in South America, and regions like northern California and northwestern Spain. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the west and south and the Tasman Sea to the east.
