The Great British Bake Off is filmed at Welford Park, a quintessentially British estate located in the heart of Newbury, Berkshire. The iconic white marquee tent is pitched on the grounds of this estate, alongside the beautiful Grade-I Listed Welford Park House and its round-tower church. Welford Park has been the primary filming location since 2014, except during the COVID-19 pandemic when filming temporarily moved to Down Hall Hotel in Essex for two seasons due to restrictions. The filming at Welford Park typically takes place over ten weeks starting in April, with the tent erected for the duration of filming. The estate features picturesque gardens, parkland, an apple orchard, and woodland, making it a perfect backdrop for the show. Before Welford Park, the show was filmed in other locations including Valentines Mansion in London and Harptree Court in Somerset. The very first series featured a tent that moved to different parts of the UK each week. Welford Park is privately owned and not open for overnight stays, but it is famous for its snowdrop gardens which are open to the public in the early months of the year. Contestants stay in nearby hotels during filming. This location is not only iconic for the show but also historically rich, having once been a monastery site and Henry VIII’s deer-hunting lodge.
