Ibn Battuta was from Tangier, Morocco. He was born there in 1304 into a family of Islamic legal scholars of Berber origin. Tangier is located in present-day Morocco, which was part of the Marinid dynasty during his time. His early education in Islamic law in Tangier helped shape his later roles as a judge (qadi) during his extensive travels.
