Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, in a prison cell where his parents Devaki and Vasudeva were confined by his maternal uncle, the tyrant king Kamsa. This birth took place on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (August–September), according to Hindu scriptures such as the Mahabharata, Harivamsa, and Bhagavata Purana

. On the night of his birth, Vasudeva secretly carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna River to Gokula (also called Vraja), where Krishna was raised by Nanda and his wife Yashoda, while Krishna's newborn sister was left in the prison in his place
