Mesopotamia was located in a historical region of West Asia, situated within the Tigris and Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. It roughly corresponds to modern-day Iraq and also includes parts of Iran, Kuwait, Syria, and Turkey. The region stretches from the Persian Gulf in the southeast to the Zagros Mountains in the northeast and the Arabian Plateau in the southeast. Mesopotamia is essentially the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, encompassing both northern (Upper Mesopotamia) and southern (Lower Mesopotamia) areas.
