The first hockey association in India was the Bengal Hockey Association, formed in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1908. Before that, the first hockey club in India was also formed in Kolkata in 1885-86, marking the beginning of organized hockey in the country. The first national hockey championship of India was held in Kolkata in 1928.
