The shehnai was traditionally played in temples, royal courts, and at weddings in India. It was regarded as an auspicious instrument but was not considered capable of independent classical expression, usually associated with ceremonial or folk contexts. Ustad Bismillah Khan revolutionized this perception by bringing the shehnai onto the classical concert stage. He demonstrated its potential for deep musical and emotional expression by mastering complex ragas and improvisational techniques. His soulful and technically sophisticated performances elevated the shehnai to the status of a respected classical instrument, beyond its traditional ceremonial use. He also performed at major music festivals and important national events, including playing from the Red Fort on India's first Independence Day in 1947, symbolizing the instrument's cultural significance in modern India. Through his artistry, the shehnai gained international recognition and a permanent place in Indian classical music repertoire.
