Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, the physical education director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Morgan created the game as a less physically demanding alternative to basketball, initially calling it "Mintonette" before it was renamed volleyball after a demonstration game. The sport combined elements from basketball, tennis, handball, and baseball and was first played in a YMCA gymnasium in Holyoke.
