Legos were invented in Billund, Denmark. The Lego Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter and furniture maker. Initially, he made wooden toys in his workshop in Billund. The first plastic interlocking bricks, which became the iconic Lego bricks, were developed and patented in 1958 by Christiansen's son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen. The company and its name "Lego" (derived from the Danish phrase "leg godt," meaning "play well") originated in Denmark and have since grown into a global toy phenomenon.
