The Pilgrims were headed toward the Virginia territory (the English colony area near Jamestown) with the intention of establishing a plantation there. They initially planned to land and settle north of the Jamestown area, in what was then the Colony of Virginia, and their voyage was guided by reports of opportunities along the eastern coast. However, after sighting Cape Cod in November 1620, they redirected their plans and instead anchored at Provincetown to explore options before ultimately deciding to establish Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts.
