A crawler lane is found on long, steep uphill sections of roads or motorways. It is an additional lane provided for slower-moving vehicles, such as large lorries or heavy vehicles, to use so that faster-moving traffic can pass safely and keep flowing smoothly. These lanes are typically located on steep gradients to help avoid slow vehicles causing traffic build-up and usually merge back into the main carriageway once the hill levels out.
