Red blood cells are missing the nucleus, a cell part found in virtually all other cells. Mature red blood cells in mammals do not have a nucleus, which allows for more space to carry hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport. In addition to lacking a nucleus, red blood cells also lack most other organelles such as the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria, to maximize room for hemoglobin and optimize oxygen delivery to tissues.
