Only one country in the world produces all the food it needs to fully feed its population without relying on imports: Guyana. According to a recent study published in Nature Food and reported by multiple sources, Guyana can produce enough food across all seven key food groups—fruits, vegetables, dairy, fish, meat, plant-based protein, and starchy staples—meeting its population's dietary needs entirely from domestic production. This makes Guyana unique among 186 countries studied. Even major agricultural nations like China and Vietnam fall short, producing enough food in six of the seven groups but not all seven. Guyana's food self-sufficiency is attributed to its fertile land, abundant water resources, increased agricultural investments, and diversified production, including rice, sugar, livestock, and aquaculture. This exceptional self-reliance buffers Guyana against global supply chain disruptions that affect many other countries reliant on food imports.
