The sense that is not first routed through the thalamus is the sense of smell (olfaction). All other senses, including sight, hearing, touch, and taste, are initially routed through the thalamus before reaching their respective cortical areas for further processing. The olfactory signals bypass the thalamus and go directly to the olfactory bulb and then to the olfactory cortex.
