The tissue type that covers body surfaces and lines the inside of organs and body cavities is epithelial tissue. Epithelial tissue forms sheets of cells that cover exterior surfaces of the body (such as the skin) and line internal cavities and hollow organs. It also lines body cavities that open to the external environment and the inside of various organs. This tissue serves as a protective barrier and is involved in absorption, secretion, and sensation functions.
