The two subatomic particles located in the nucleus of an atom are protons and neutrons. Protons carry a positive charge, while neutrons have no charge (they are neutral). Together, protons and neutrons make up the dense nucleus at the center of the atom, containing nearly all of its mass. Electrons, which carry a negative charge, are located outside the nucleus in electron shells or orbitals.
