The type of microorganism that reproduces using binary fission is primarily prokaryotic organisms, especially bacteria. Binary fission is the main method of asexual reproduction for bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and many others. Some unicellular eukaryotes like amoeba and paramecium also reproduce through binary fission, but it is most characteristic of prokaryotes. In this process, a single cell duplicates its DNA and divides into two identical daughter cells, making it an efficient way for rapid population growth. Binary fission does not produce genetic variation as offspring are clones of the parent cell.
