The U.S. state that produces the most pumpkins is Illinois. Illinois leads the nation by a wide margin, producing over 650 million pounds of pumpkins annually, which amounts to nearly 40% of the entire U.S. pumpkin production. This production is more than the next five top pumpkin-producing states combined. Illinois has ideal growing conditions including rich soil and a favorable climate, and is home to major pumpkin processing plants like Nestle Libby's in Morton, which handles over 85% of the canned pumpkins sold in the U.S. Much of the pumpkins grown there are used for processing into pie fillings and other products.
