The chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is appointed by the President of India under Article 316 of the Indian Constitution. The President appoints not only the chairman but also the other members of the UPSC. The chairman holds office for a term of six years or until reaching the age of 65, whichever is earlier, and cannot be reappointed to the office after the term ends. The chairman or members must usually be senior civil officers or persons with notable government service experience, and the commission functions with autonomy as a constitutional body. The President also has the authority to remove the chairman under certain constitutional conditions.
