Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb student and member of the revolutionary group Young Bosnia. Princip shot them at close range while they were in a car that had stalled near a delicatessen, after a failed earlier assassination attempt by another conspirator. Princip's political motive was to free Bosnia and Herzegovina from Austro-Hungarian rule and to establish a South Slav state.
